In view of the extreme weather we are having here and around the world-record snows, devastating earthquakes, tsunamis, mudslides, floods, fires, hurricanes, ice storms, tornados, and more; it’s time to listen to what the Great Meteorologist–the One who controls the weather–has to say about it: “For He says to the snow, `Fall on the earth’; likewise He speaks to the showers and to the down pour of His mighty rains. God seals up (stops, brings to a standstill by severe weather) the hand of every man [and now under His seal their hands are forced to inactivity], that all men whom He has made may know His doings (His sovereign power and their subjection to it)” (Job 37:6-7 AB).
There’s no doubt about it, we have certainly found ourselves subjected, over the years, to God’s sovereign power by His weather. This winter He sent a record snowstorm rendering our federal government inoperative for days and many nations around the world have been brought to a standstill–all because of God’s weather. This is not happenstance; His weather is His voice speaking to us: “He covers His hands with the lightning and commands it to strike the mark. Its noise declares His presence … Listen closely to the thunder of His voice, and the rumbling that goes out from His mouth … doing great things which we cannot comprehend … He disperses the cloud of His lightning and it changes direction, turning around by His guidance, that it may do whatever He commands it on the face of the inhabited earth. Whether for correction, or for His world, or for lovingkindness, He causes it to happen” (Job 36:32, 33; 37:2, 5, 11-13 NAS).
God’s in charge of our weather, and even though we don’t appear to be listening, God’s using it to get our attention. However, it seems that most of our minds are being taken captive by the proponents of theories–evolution, global warming, carbon footprints, sustainable development and so much more. These theories are the outgrowth of intellectualism gone haywire–by men who are defying God-theories which we so easily accept or passively tolerate. Scripture warns, “What fools the nations are to rage against the Lord! How strange that men should try to outwit God! For a summit conference of the nations [Kyoto Climate Conference is an example] has been called to plot against the Lord and His Messiah, Christ the King … But God in heaven merely laughs! He is amused by all their puny plans. And then in fierce fury He rebukes them and fills them with fear” (Ps. 2:1, 2, 4 LB).
Reading this passage is like reading today’s news. The prophet Jeremiah warned, “Is it not from the mouth of the Most High [the Great Meteorologist] that both good and ill [weather] go forth?” (Lam. 3:38 NAS) Consider hurricane Katrina and let the devastation of New Orleans come to mind.
When God spoke to Job about the weather from out of the whirlwind, He said, “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, which I have reserved for the time of distress, for the day of war and battle?” (Job 38:22-23 NAS)
(He has reserved one hundred pound hailstones in His storehouse for the future war of Armageddon–Rev. 16:21.)
“I form the light and create darkness, I make peace [national well-being] and I create [physical] evil (calamity); I am the Lord, Who does all these things” (Is. 45:7AB).
“Shall a trumpet be blown in the city and the people not be alarmed or afraid? Shall misfortune or evil occur [as punishment] and the Lord has not caused it?” (Amos 3:6 AB)
Around the world, His weather curses are becoming more and more apparent and increasingly devastating. His curses do not come upon us without cause (Pr. 26:2). We bring them upon ourselves by sowing the wind and in so doing we are reaping the whirlwind (breaking His Commandments and reaping the results).
God’s weather is a two-edged sword and well–documented in the Scriptures for those who are willing to search Him out. His weather is sent to both bless and discipline us or destroy us. Only a person deficient in wisdom would ignore, underestimate or disregard the power and purpose of God and His weather.
“It is He who made the earth by His power, who established the world by His wisdom, and by His understanding He stretched out the heavens. When He utters His voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens, and He causes the clouds to ascend from the end of the earth; He makes lightning for the rain, and brings forth the wind from His storehouses” (Jer. 51:15, 16 NAS).
Weather, especially disastrous weather, use to be recognized as an `act of God’, but many of us have forsaken this knowledge. Will we ever return to our senses and renounce our wayward thinking? The weather is not out of our control as we might think. God’s Word promises that we can change the weather–if we want to: “Now it shall be, if you will diligently obey the Lord your God, being careful to do all His commandments … the Lord will open for you His good storehouse, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand … But it shall come about, if you will not obey the Lord your God … that all the curses shall come upon you and overtake you” (Dt. 28:1, 2, 15 NAS).
God’s weather is His voice calling us to return to Him and obey His Word. For Scripture reveals that the Great Meteorologist is definitely active in our daily affairs and is a Divine Force to be recognized, to be reckoned with, and most importantly, not to be ignored.
